Wilder & Women - A Live Stream Panel Conversation on April 1

Trust Women. Men won't be much help to you from now on.

-  Thornton Wilder, The Eighth Day

Thornton Wilder populated his novels and plays with forthright, resilient and decidedly contemporary female characters. An abbreviated list of these leading ladies includes Sabina and Mrs. Antrobus (The Skin of Our Teeth); Emily Webb, Mrs. Webb, and Mrs. Gibbs (Our Town); Dolly Levi, Irene Molloy, and Miss Van Huysen (The Matchmaker); Cleopatra and Clodia (The Ides of March); and almost all the key characters in The Bridge of San Luis Rey.

On April 1 at the Samuel French Event Space in New York City, journalist and arts marketer Mark Blankenship will lead a lively discussion entitled “Wilder & Women” - a panel conversation focused on Wilder’s major plays and his novel, The Bridge of San Luis Rey.

“For some time now we have wanted to explore Thornton Wilder’s continuing appeal for practitioners and audiences with a special emphasis on his female characters,” says Tappan Wilder, Thornton Wilder’s nephew and executor of his uncle’s literary estate. “Thornton’s leading ladies share a complexity and humanity rarely duplicated in the work of his contemporaries, and we feel that a close examination will provoke rousing conversation.”

The panel discussion will be held in the Samuel French Event Space in New York City on Monday, April 1 at 6:30 PM ET. Facebook will host the FREE live stream, watch here: https://www.facebook.com/ThorntonWilder/
